On Wednesday, a Higher National Diploma 2 student of Mass Communication, Omobolanle Odebunmi took the first position in the 5th edition of the public speaking competition organized by the Association of Mass Communication Students, AMACOS.

The event, which had in attendance the Head of the Department, Mr. Lekan Togunwa, two senior lecturers, Dr Sina Aina and Dr Sola Adeosun among other dignitaries, took place at the department’s main hall.

Facing about 10 opponents, Odebunmi won effortlessly throughout the stages of the competition, giving her an edge over others.

While she won with 76%, two students from HND1, Okikiola Shopehin and Janet Aluko won with 74% and 73% respectively.

Shopehin and Aluko therefore took the second and third position respectively.

Among the participants, 3 were disqualified at first presentation while total of 7 were given another topics to retake for the second round, another 2 was disqualified at the second presentation.

Therefore, to select winners, impromptu topics were given to the remaining 5 contestants to speak on for 5 minutes each.

Speaking after her win, Odebunmi expressed gratitude to God and the organizers, stressing that she wouldn’t have won without the motivations.

Although, she mentioned that her opponents were strong, she stressed that her hope to win was never shattered.

“At some point, I shook, but I still kept on believing that I could win, and I won, I came to win and I won, thank God,” she said.

She therefore asked other shy students to come out of their comfort zones and put themselves out there.

She urged students to also utilize platforms for their own benefits.

Speaking at the event, the Head Of Department, Mr. Lekan Togunwa expressed excitement over the organization of the program 5th edition.

In his words, Mass communication department is the only department on campus that organizes public speaking program for her students.

He said, “the program was established to give the students of mass communication the floor to demonstrate their capacity in term of speaking and writing, as every communicator are required to speak and write effectively.”

He therefore pledged that the department will do more in putting through, the students, in the methodology and practical aspect journalism.

Also, asking the competition’s chief judge, Samuel Ogunyinka, about the participant’s performances, he said “the final results shows we have a lot of creative people in the department, i’m sure some people didn’t come out, I won’t be shocked to see more, the final results shows how good they were, I celebrate that.”

The department’s president, Afolabi Wasiu also commended the participants of the 2024 public speaking competition.

He also appreciated the judges for their commitment and transparency during the event

Other students who participated in the debate were; Akanbi Ojuregbe (HND1), Shopehin Okikiola (HND1), Aina Isaiah Samson (HND2) , Ogunleye Olawale (HND2), Ahmodu Khairat Afolashade (ND2), Eimankhu Nelson (ND2), Kamorudeen Karimat (ND2), and Martins Oyinkansola (ND1).
