About four persons have been arrested by security operatives on campus for allegedly extorting money from fresh students in the polytechnic.

The security operatives under the aegis of Observation Post Corps Services (OPCS) who arrested the suspects have handed to over to the Nigerian Police.

This was revealed by the Chief Security Officer of the institution, Adekunle Adekoya in chat with Press Club MAPOLY.

Adekoya said the suspects would sit under trees and call on any perceived fresh student who walks by and threaten them.

The CSO said a student from the department of Computer Science was arrested for allegedly collecting N200 ‘forcefully’ from one newly-admitted student.

The suspect (names withheld), in a video seen by Press Club confirmed he collected the money from the fresh student.

He however denied to have forcefully collected the money despite he did not know him before their encounter.

The suspect claimed he was in school for his final year project as of the time of his arrest.

Adekoya also said that palpable peace has crept back to the campus following the reduction of crime cases.

“Crime rates in MAPOLY has reduced drastically. The campus is now peaceful.”

“Now that students have resumed, what we are facing now is the issue of extorting fresh students.

“They extort money from students. Some stallites would stay under the tree.

“About four of them have been caught for extorting students and have been handed over to the police.

“The management headed by the professor is doing all the best to assist us in doing our job.

“We are working on it. By January, we are going to acquire some equipment vis-a-vis eavesdropping equipment, more handcuffs, crowd control, communication and combat equipment.

“We are working on it. You know we just acquired some equipment and vehicles recently even though we still need equipment and personnel and they have promised to do that for us this new session.

“We are currently faced with the problem of extortion and for a long time now, crime rate has drastically reduced on campus,” he said.

Adekoya also urged the students to report any criminal movements or occurrence to the security unit.

He said his telephone number, 08130446883 is available at all times.
