Between Tuesday, Tuesday 31st and February 2nd, Authorities of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta held Orientation Day for newly-admitted students into the ivory tower. Polytechnic lawyer, Barrister Razaq Ojo reeled out the various misconduct students are likely to commit on campus. Press Club MAPOLY’s Oluwasegun Oke brings you excerpts,

You have rights to sit for examination provided you fulfilled the examination requirements. Rights to know your result, write to sit and write your exam. The most important thing, you have rights not to sit for your exams if you are sick but you don’t know that rights as students, there are laid down procedure that you must follow if you are sick and you can come to do examination, it won’t affect your results.

Rights to join any group or association and rights to form lawful associations. Rights to get rid of external forces within the legal means. If you read your Bible and Quran (students handbook) you will find more rights in it.
Misconduct including dressing, indecent dressing, I have observed that guys or men are guilty of this misconduct because most of them don’t dress well. They put on all sort of tattered crazy and wicked jeans that are not good. If you get to the Directorate of Students’ Affairs, there are more than a thousand tattered jeans there seized from the students.

Another misconduct is fighting. We are in a civilised society, you don’t need to fight here. There are laid down rules and procedures to follow if someone offends you. Fighting attracts one semester suspension if you are caught, don’t fight!

Another thing you do is that you don’t beg i.e corporate begging on campus.

Another serious misconduct is bringing jottings to the examination halls. Please don’t bring your jotting or sheets of paper to the examination hall no matter how small because it attracts four semesters suspension which means two session and you will still pay for those sessions that you are out of school in order to retain your studentship.

Don’t bring your phone to the examination hall either switched on or off. The polytechnic frowns so much at it and it attracts two semesters suspension if you are caught.

Exchange of question paper(s) or answer sheet(s) in the examination hall is a misconduct in the polytechnic. Please don’t engage in it, it carries two-semester suspension. Don’t talk in the examination hall. It carries two semesters suspension.

Serious misconduct mean misconduct that will lead you out of the polytechnic.

Impersonation, I have observed that some students will bring their brothers or sisters at home to help them sit for their exam. Second semester last session, there were about five of them that were caught. Some boys will come and write examinations for their girlfriends and the two parties will be punished.

Don’t join cult groups, the day you join you have signed your death warrant. There are cult boys around, don’t let us deceive ourselves, don’t join them. Don’t be member to their groups because if you do, it is outright expulsion in the polytechnic.

Another thing is carrying of weapons like guns, cutlasses, knives, blades and others don’t carry them. About two sessions ago, some female students were fighting over boyfriends and they used blades to cut their boyfriends’ face.

The breach of the matriculation oath is misconduct. You will be given the matriculation form on the 16th of February if you breach any of the misconduct on it, the polytechnic will send you out.

Ladies, and gentlemen, when your rights is being, has been or likely to be infringed upon, don’t hesitate to see me in my office at the Admission Office (small admin).
